When I moved to Virginia Beach, I started a chapter of the Modern Quilt Guild since there wasn’t one here already. I knew that was a big part of my life, as well as a great way to make some new friends in a new town. Never would I have imagined it would be as large as it is, and only after two meetings. I think this group of talented ladies will go far and have some awesome events.
One thing that we are doing is a member block of the month program. Each member gets a month to be the queen bee and provide fabric and directions to make her block. The following week the blocks are returned. I wanted to do something scrappy and use up some of my overflowing scraps!
I created a solid star with the prints being the background. I have seen similar blocks like this out there, but couldn’t find a tutorial for what I wanted. So, here one is!
A Scrappy, Solid Star Tutorial!
Fabric and Cutting:
This tutorial is to make a single block. Remember, if you are making a whole quilt, you will need around 300 squares (depending on desired size). This block is a great way to use up some of those scraps!
(12) 3 x3 inch squares of assorted prints (4) 2.5 x 2.5 inch squares of assorted prints (12) 3×3 inch squares of solid color (4) 2.5 x 2.5 inch squares of solid color
You will need to create (24) half square triangles out of the (12) 3 x3 inch squares of solid and print. If you need help making a half square triangle, you can visit my tutorial here!
Trim all half square triangles down to 2.5 inch squares.
Using the layout below, assemble the four corners.
Trim to 4.5 x 4.5 inch square.
Next, you need to make four of the following units.
Trim to 4.5 x 4.5 inch square.
These will go in between all the corner pieces on each side of the block.
Time to assemble the rows!
