Electric Quilts and a *Giveaway*

I’m sure a lot of you have heard about the Electric Quilt software.  And if you have heard of it, I’m sure you are vaguely aware of what it does, digitally shows you quilts.  But really it’s SO much more than that!

EQ7 (Electric Quilt 7) is the ultimate organizer for any quilter.  There is a thread library to organize what thread colors you have and (the best part) a fabric library.  You upload pictures of what you have in your stash and you will have all of your fabric documented in one place so you can flip through what you have.   It also has thousands of pre-uploaded fabrics by designers like Anna Maria Horner, Joel Dewberry, Amy Butler, Art Gallery and more.  When you design a quilt, you can see what it would look like in any of these prints or the prints you have uploaded.

Of course there are the main functions of EQ7, designing blocks and whole quilts.  This program is extremely user friendly.   The help out there ensures that anyone with any level of computer knowledge would be able to succeed at using this program.  The software comes with a text book manual with detailed instructions on how to use any function or button.  There is also a series of 10 videos to help out and some lessons you can print.  The program itself has this awesome little ? button that will give you tips on how to use any button.  And if that still doesn’t answer your question, the customer support by email or telephone is AMAZING!

Here is a simple chevron block I created.  The block creator has a simple graph paper grid and you draw whatever block you wish.  There’s a straight line pencil and a curve pencil to make perfect curves.  You can even color the block in with fabrics of your choosing.

After you have designed the block, you can go to “work on quilt” to see how you want to lay it out or what it will look like as a whole.

This is the quilt design interface.  You can choose how big to make the blocks and quilt, how many boarders and how big you want them and any other design aspect you can think of.  Once you have designed a block and saved it into your sketch book you can drag the block into the empty squares

See?  Super easy!  After you finished your quilt layout the way you want to make it you have many more options such as rotary cutting diagrams, paper piecing, and fabric yardage.  So with EQ7 all that horrid (at least it is to me) quilt math is all done for you!

And if you are in the mood for a quick project and not wanting to design something, EQ7 comes with THOUSANDS of blocks in the block library and full quilts already designed.  You can go ahead and print one of those or change the colors to what you want and play around with an already designed quilt.

To break it all down:

  • User Friendly: A
  • Customer Service: A+
  • Creative Features: A+
  • Preloaded Fabrics: B+
  • Preloaded Blocks and Quilts: A+
  • Overall: A+
I definitely think that EQ7 is well worth the money, especially if you are interested in the design aspect of quilt making!

So, do you think you would like to try it out too?  The wonderful people over at Electric Quilt gave me a copy to giveaway to one of you!

To enter, simply tell me what part of EQ7 excites you the most.  For a bonus entry, let me know you are a follower in a separate comment (New and old followers welcome!) And for another bonus entry, tweet, blog or facebook about this giveaway and come back here and leave a comment telling me you did.  Just be sure to mention @kd_quilts in your tweet with the link to this post!

I like the option to upload fabric so you can see what it would look like in the quilt.

I love that you can upload prints! And all the preuploaded ones. It would be so awesome to see how a quilt would look with specific fabrics.

The idea of designing a block and seeing how colors would go together is one of my favorite things you mentioned.

  10. laurel says:

i would LOVE to design quilts, but balk at the whole “figuring out the size of pieces and how big that would make the quilt and oh by the way, how much fabric do i need?” i’m notorious for not buying enough fabric, especially for backings, and this would be way too much fun. i’m a computer junkie as it is, so this would blend my computer + fabric loves.

I follow your blog via my rss reader!

  12. Cory says:

    Uh oh, double post. Sorry!

This would be awesome, less graph paper would be used and it’d be so much fun to be able to see the fabrics right there!

  16. Melinda says:

I have Quilt Design Wizard and it’s great BUT I have designed a couple of quilts and I cannot put one of them in there because I am unable to create my own block design in this program. I really like the idea of being able to create my own blocks.

  18. I spent almost 2 hours last night auditioning fabrics for a laptop sleeve I’m making. TWO HOURS!! To be able to sit next to hubby while watching TV and do all that on the computer before beginning? Priceless!

  19. Toni says:

Oh, that looks so fun! I would love to see all the blocks together and see the secondary designs so I could finalize colors/fabrics before cutting and cutting and cutting! Thanks!

I think the thing about EQ7 that excites me the most is actually being able to visualize what the quilt will look like before spending all the time cutting and piecing, and then deciding that you hate the color combinations or the block sizes, etc.

This software sounds amazing! I think I would like the organizational aspect the most. Busting through my stash. I definitely purchased more than I sewed this year :/

I would love to have EQ7. I am so bad a deciding on fabrics and not second guessing myself through the whole project until it is done. Thank you so much for sharing your as you learn about the application. I’m so excited to learn more!

  69. I’d love to design my own blocks more accurately.

  70. katie says:

I found you on facebook and now follow you there. Yah!

  71. Jennifer says:

I would like to be able to see the fabric together in the pattern I chose. I can usually put together several, but the last 2 or 3 always get me. If I can’t picture it in my head, I get very afraid to cut into the fabric!

  72. Erin says:

For me the thigh that excited me the most is making my own patterns…I am so new to quilting that, that is the most scary for me.

  73. Erin says:

I follow you via Google Reader.

  74. Joanne says:

I would love to design quilts.

  75. Cathy says:

I would love this. It would be so nice to have a program figure out how many 2″ squares or 4-1/2″ hst I would need for a quilt. How many headaches I would avoid not having to figure it out on paper and the old calculator and still not get it right.

  76. Fran says:

I love everything about EQ7 but being able to upload fabrics to use in the design process is just genius, as is the ability to have all the mathematical calculations worked out for you – maths is NOT my strong suit. Thanks for an amazing giveaway.

  77. Fran says:

I now follow you in Google Reader, thanks.

  78. Ramona says:

I love the whole idea of being able to design a block and quilt and then playing with different fabrics to see how it all looks together before I even cut into the fabric.

  80. Mom C says:

I don’t know which feature I want most. Everything you mentioned sounds wonderful. I wasn’t aware that you could download all your projects for storage or that it comes with pre loaded fabric choices from various designers. I really love the design functions, those I would use tons. Thanks.

  82. Cathy Byrd says:

Well – it is hard to pick just one thing. The software is so powerful. Being able to choose colors, and patterns of fabric – block styles – border sizes – and I could go on and on.
    That’s pretty impressive.
I have seen quilts designed with EQ and they have been some of my favorites :-)
I think my favorite part is the fabric library.
That’s just plain cool and groovy ;-)

EVERYTHING excites me about EQ7. This has been on my wish list for quite some time. I love that you can design your own patterns and apply your fabrics of choice BEFORE even cutting any fabric. I love making 8-bit video game quilts (80s games like pac man, mario, donkey kong, etc) and so far I have been doing this with graph paper and colored pencils. It is a bit painful. With EQ7 I could design it all out, determine how many of each colored square I need, and determine if I need to make it bigger or smaller. My last quilt was supposed to be a full sized quilt…it turned out almost as big as a king! Oops.

I just became a follower (google)

  193. I like that I could try out different fabrics and arrangements with EQ7.

  194. Margaret says:

I like the ease of creating my original quilts and would love to have EQ7 to play with

  195. Kaye Ireland says:

I’ve used EQ5 and I’m ready to upgrade to EQ7 now. I like to design and am looking forward to the new options to import my own fabrics. Would love to win this software!

  196. poppyinpink says:

Wow, what’s not to love with this program… I have had a try of it and to readily see my quilt before me to get it clearly defined is the biggest draw I think…but to be able to play with it to my heart’s content and tweek every jot and tittle to get it just right before cutting into precious fabric..that is hard to beat!

  197. poppyinpink says:

I am following you in google reader! Thank-you.

  198. Talin says:

I would love to win the EQ7 to use with my quilting frame/qbot. I have had my qbot for a little over a year and am just getting comfortable with it. I have heard about EQ7 from my qbot google group, so it would be perfect if I gave it a try myself. I will have my fingers crossed.

  199. Sherril says:

I love that you can download your actual fabric and preview your quilt. Hope I win this great software!

  200. wow! I would love to play with this software!

  201. Deborah in Atlantaq says:

I’m a visual person, and this would let me actually “see” the quilt before I’ve made it. That would be AWESOME!!!!

  202. Sue Goodin says:

I love that you can actually load your fabric and try it in different patterns and know that you will like it before you cut it and hate it.

  203. Jodi G. says:

I’ve heard this is a great program and alot of fun. I’m a visual kind of person and love to see what or as close as possible, what something will look like while in the planning stage. It would be fun to design a quilt and having all the different blocks already in the program is a great tool.

Thank you and Electric Quilt for an awesome giveaway and a chance to win.

  208. Susan says:

I’d love to try out the designing – as it charting out how the block settings will go. It would be so much faster than my paper and pencil sketches! If it doesn’t work on Mac, though, don’t enter me in the drawing. Thanks for the chance!

  209. Daniela Martisovitsova says:

I follow you on Google Reader. The idea of playing and creating with no paper and coloring pencils is very tempting and freeing.

  210. Janice Shreve says:

I’d love to have EQ7….I can see where it would be a great way to plan my quilts. Right now, I doodle what I want and sometimes my figuring isn’t exact, so therefore I have mathematical challenges. Everything works out in the end, but EQ7 could have me quilting instead of doing more math.

  211. I would love to have this program! My favorite part is that it will tell you the fabric yardage that you need for a project. I don’t like doing all of that math when I create my own pattern on paper. It often means three trips to the fabric store because I didn’t buy enough the first time.
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  212. I’m a follower, thanks!

    The layout feature is exciting

  215. Suzanne Montgomery says:

What excites me the most about EQ7 is the layout possibilities. I don’t have space for a design wall and the floor doesn’t work very well.

  216. Suzanne Montgomery says:

Just signed up to follow via email.

  217. Photina says:

I am most excited that you can build your own blocks and upload your own fabric. I have a basic quilt maker software that I was given but it doesn’t let you make your own blocks and can only use the fabric uploaded already. I would love to be able to make my own block on the computer since my drawing skills aren’t so great.

I like the feature that will calculate how much fabric is needed for a quilt, also, I’d love to have a photo gallery of my stash! Thank you!

  221. Janet says:

Being able to try out fabrics in different blocks and layouts without having to actually cut into the fabric. Thanks for a chance to win.

  222. Sara says:

My favorite part of EQ7 is being able to explore my design creativity through original patterns and “tweaking” older patterns.

  223. I’ve always wanted to experiment with EQ, but couldn’t justify the price. I’d love to play around with their pre-made blocks and see how a project would look before actually cutting my fabric. Thanks for a wonderful review!

  224. I follow your blog in Google Reader. Thanks!

  225. Vanna Rhoden says:

Uploading the fabric to see what the quilt will look like before cutting would be amazing!!

  226. Alexandra says:

Ooh, I’m going to enter this, I’d like to try this out! I think I’d really enjoy being able to better visualize what my idea is going to look like before I get started. I get stuck sometimes because I’m just not sure how something is going to turn out!

  229. Rachel says:

I’d be most excited to design blocks with EQ7 and see how they interact with each other when the fabric is added.

  248. Katrina H says:

I really like the idea of planning the quilt using the prints from actual fabric instead of eyeballing it with fill in colors!

  265. The whole idea of this program excites me more than I can say! I LOVE that you can use real fabric in your designs! With so many quilt patterns out there & endless options in fabric, it would blow my mind to be able to really see what the finished product would look like!
